Excellent pointers and thanks. This can also be used the other way. Use a synopsis to write the novel. Of course, ya better write the novel. Give me a few months is the wrong thing to say to an agent : )

That's precisely how published writers will prepare a proposal for a novel for their editor--say if they have an option clause. Write a synopsis and the first few chapters to sell on spec, then go back and finish writing the book. There's generally an understanding that some changes will occur in the process, but it makes for a good start.

In addition, I find that authors whose novels need some work will discover those holes when they try to write a synopsis and find their major plot points aren't evenly distributed or they have slow patches. Writing a synopsis can be a great way to determine what needs some editing.
